TELEVISION:

I’ve edited over one hundred hours of television including reality, scripted and webseries. My background in reality TV was a great training ground as I got to build the story from scratch. I have also worked on multiple award-winning scripted shows. High Life screened on the BBC and won a Content London Award for Best Digital Series. I still jump at the chance to edit webseries as I find you can really experiment and try different editing styles. Another reason I love television is because multiple episodes gives me a lot more space to really develop character arcs, and create empathy.

It’s not every day a global pandemic hits forcing you to cancel your wedding and head into immediate lockdown with your fiancé … and his mum.

MUSIC VIDEOS:

Pacing, rhythm, and style are all such important components of editing. Music videos are a great way to show these skills – and they are a lot of fun! I like to work on projects with a lyrical style and sometimes musical sequences. This is where my background in music videos comes into play.

Screen Shot 2020-09-17 at 10.08.02 PM

SHORTS:

Short films are great as they get right to the point and often drop you in the middle of a pivotal moment for the main character. It takes skill to build a rich world in a short amount of time. I’ve edited over 30 short films and I always love the passion that directors bring. Often with short films it is the one burning story they want to tell and I love that energy.

Screen Shot 2020-09-17 at 9.48.44 PM

FEATURES:

Performance is the building block of a feature film. I enjoy honing in on the smallest detail – a look in the eye or a tiny facial expression. Together these small moments build to make the story and connect with our audience. I also love the time we get to play around and experiment on a feature film. Collaborating with a director and trying all ideas is really magical.

Despite the Gods Australian Premiere

Jen_web
Despite the Gods has its Australian premiere at the Sydney International Film Festival. In a sold out session the film proved to be a hit with festival goers. Variety said, “this is a penetrating, highly entertaining portrait of Lynch as an artist and single mother living through the despairing lows and exhilarating highs of filming on the subcontinent.” – Richard Kuipers, Variety – full review.

Melanie wins best editing at ASE Awards

SFPoster_web
Melanie won best editing in a short film with Something Fishy at this year’s ASE (Australian Screen Editors) Awards. The awards are nicknamed “Ellies” after the bronze elephant statue awarded to winners. Something Fishy, directed by Kristy Best, is a quirky black comedy that “taps into the sweetest, most naive part of children and turns it on its head. And does so in a funny, and slightly morbid, but totally bad ass way.” (Merrel Davis, Filmmaker. Full Article)
